My dog keeps coughing despite home remedies. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 7 years and 3 months old | 16 lbs

My 7 year old Alaskan Klee kai won’t stop coughing. Mostly indoors. We have tried giving her honey, coconut oil, and diffusing some essential oils in the room she sleeps in. We are at a loss. Our other two dogs have no symptoms.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Bella isn’t feeling well. If she is coughing I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam, radiographs of her chest, and possible blood work. She could have a heart condition, a lung problem, heartworm disease, parasites, a fungal infection, or an allergy. You need a diagnosis to find out how to treat her and it may not be something that is contagious to other dogs. Also, please be cautious with essential oils as they can be toxic to pets. Once a diagnosis is made, the vet can discuss ways to help her. Good luck and kisses to Bella!
