Why is my Chihuahua scratching his clean ears? Mites or allergies?

My Chihuahua is scratching at his ears but they look clean. I put some ear mite drops in them and wiped them out with a cotton ball and the cotton is clean. Do you think it might ear mites or something else? I had putting drops in his ears if not needed. He cried little tears whenever I place drops in. Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Typically dogs don’t have ear mites. If he is scratching at the ears, he could have an ear infection, a wax build up deep down, other skin mites that are microscopic or maybe allergies. I recommend taking him to the vet so they can look deep inside with a scope. They may have to test for an infection or try different medications. Once they look inside his ears and at the rest of his body they can give you a better diagnosis and treatment plan. Good luck and kisses to Chewy!
