Why is my Chihuahua scratching his clean ears? Mites or allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My Chihuahua is scratching at his ears but they look clean. I put some ear mite drops in them and wiped them out with a cotton ball and the cotton is clean. Do you think it might ear mites or something else? I had putting drops in his ears if not needed. He cried little tears whenever I place drops in.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Typically dogs don’t have ear mites. If he is scratching at the ears, he could have an ear infection, a wax build up deep down, other skin mites that are microscopic or maybe allergies. I recommend taking him to the vet so they can look deep inside with a scope. They may have to test for an infection or try different medications. Once they look inside his ears and at the rest of his body they can give you a better diagnosis and treatment plan. Good luck and kisses to Chewy!
