Why does my cat have a wet, scabby bald spot on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9.5 lbs

hi my cat has a patch of no hair, just skin, on the top of his body near the shoulder blades. There is a red scab under the fur above it. It is sometimes wet, but he could have just licked it, not sure, the moisture had no odor. No irritations, or abrasions. He's a black and white DSH. Any ideas? Thanks.

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
