Why is my neutered dog humping his toys and bedding? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Estonian Hound | Male | 11 months and 11 days old | 5 lbs

My dog Ajax was fixed at 4 months and he is a Malchi. He is getting grovie with his toy duck and bedding. He hasn't done that before, he is 10 months old now. This is disturbing but funny he seems to enjoy it, I try to get his mind off it. What do you think I should do?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Humping in dogs isn't always sexual in nature. They can hump to show dominance or because of anxiety. I would do exactly what you are doing. When he starts getting excited or starts showing signs that he may start to hump, calm him down, ask him to come to you and sit or lay down. Then give him a treat. Try to stop the behavior before it starts. I hope this helps and I wish you and Ajax the very best!
