Dog can't poop, whining, stomach pain. Is it constipation or blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 96 lbs

Hi, last night my Huskita, 4 yrs old, started whining as he circled to defecate and was unable to do his business. He now keeps shifting from laying on one side to the other while occasionally standing to circle and whine while trying to go to the bathroom. He seems ok other than the stomach tenderness and inability to defecate. Should I treat with stool softener and give it time or is this an obstruction and a vet is needed asap? Please let me know, I'm kinda going out of my mind over here lol.

Personally since this has been going on since yesterday I recommend an exam right away. They can do a rectal to see if there is an obstruction there preventing him from defecating, and will probably recommend an x-ray to examine the intestines for a blockage. If all looks normal they may give an enema to empty him out. Intestinal blockages are not uncommon and can become very serious, possibly life threatening so checking him soon is a good idea. He may just be constipated which is not serious but it's best to know for sure and get him some relief in a timely manner. Giving a stool softener may take too long and not be effective.
