My dog's hair is thinning from fleas. How long until it grows back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 6 days old | 80 lbs

Mild, slowly thinning hair over rear back. Classic flea bit dermatitis. I have never seen a flea but, I'm going to treat both dogs just incase. My question is How long before her hair comes back in? How long before I know it is something else? 9month old Bernese Mountain Dog.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Generally, if the correct allergy is being treated, it may take a few weeks for the hair to start coming back. If there is no improvement within 1-2 months, I would assume it may be due to a different kind of allergy such as to the food or environment. Good luck and have a good night!
