What to do for my bird's broken leg when a vet isn't an option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 24 days old

I have a mature female house sparrow that flew out of her cage and into the ceiling fan, breaking her leg. It is broken above her femur, where the leg connects into the socket inside of the body it seems. It cannot be splinted because it is so high up. I currently have her bad leg wrapped naturally against her body so it doesn't cause her any further pain. The vet is not an option, what can I do for her? I do have experience with other birds and antibiotics if needed. Thanks!

You are probably doing all that can be done at home. Without a physical exam, we cannot legally recommend an antibiotics dose. The type of injury is likely still painful and she may need pain medication. Ideally, an exam with a veterinarian is what is needed to diagnose the extent of the injury and to discuss possible treatments.
