How can I soothe my dog's itchy skin and allergies naturally at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

My dog has been super itchy lately. He plays on the grass outside and we had to bath him more often latley. We use a good shampoo for sensitive skin and he's had allergies many times before and even proscribed meds from our vet in the past. The itching isn't as bad as it used to be, but it started up again. Mostly itches his butt and tail. He licks his lips when we itch the base of his tail. No scooting. I would like to try somethings at home first. Any recommendations to sooth his itchy skin?

I am sorry to hear about Max. I like a colloidal oatmeal shampoo and creme rinse such as Epi-soothe, or Duoxo Calm products https://www.douxo.com/us/douxo-solutions/douxo-calm . You can also discuss with your vet whether an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec would be safe for him. Sometimes dogs with mild allergies benefit from daily antihistamine during the time of year their allergies flare up. Also wiping him off with baby wipes after he comes indoors or having him wear booties and a shirt when outside can decrease the contact time with his skin and the grass and help decrease itching.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I would recommend the Duoxo Calm line of products, https://www.douxo.com/us/douxo-solutions/douxo-calm , a fatty acid supplement such as Welactin, and I would talk to your vet about an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec https://www.petcoach.co/search/?query=can%20i%20give%20benadryl https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/.
