My outdoor cat has a painful hole on his neck. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, my grown cat is not a house-cat, he lives outside, in our yard and often goes out on the street. Yesterday, I noticed he was scratching his neck and heard a sound like he was in pain. On his neck, skin was visible. In one place. I've put some cream Zinc vitamine cream on it, hoping it won't itch and he wouldn't scratch himself. Then, the skin was visible in 2 places on his neck, right under his mouth. Now, there's a small hole! I'm panicking, please help!

Since your cat lives outdoors, it's likely he got into a fight with another animal, and the small hole can be a sign of an abscess. It could also be due to an injury or a cuterebra. It sounds like it's really bothering him if he's scratching his neck, and this is something that needs to be treated by a vet. I would take him into the vet first thing Monday for treatment. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
