Why is my ferret scratching so much even with ear mite treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | neutered | 3 years old

My ferret, Jake, has been scratching a lot for the past couple hours. I know ferrets do tend to scratch themselves but this is continuously, he doesn’t even look up for a minute. My 3 ferrets have ear mites and I just started their treatment today and they all seem okay with it other than Jake. I checked his fur and didn’t see any mites but he was moving too much for me to get a good look. I can’t sleep and neither can he.

I am so sorry to hear that Jake is so uncomfortable. In addition to the ear mite treatment I often send my patients home with an ear medication that has some steroid in it to decrease the itching and make them more comfortable. It may be worth asking your veterinarian for Something similar. Another option would be an injection of steroids that would last a week or two. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
