Dewormed puppy: round belly, soft stool. Could she still have worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 month and 21 days old | 50 lbs

I have had my puppy for a week, she is a 7 week old goldendoodle. I am concerned that she may have worms, but her breeder had her wormed biweekly by her vet. She is very energetic and doesn’t seem to be unhealthy, but her belly is very round and her stool is still very mushy. Is there a chance she could still be wormy?

Congratulation on your new addition! One of the most common reasons that we will see soft stools in a puppy is some type of intestinal parasite. Puppies can commonly have intestinal parasites even if they have been previously dewormed. Some are microscopic, so the only way to know that they have them is for your vet to look under the microscope. And even if a puppy has been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are so many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. So, my first recommendation is to have your veterinarian do a fecal check on Zola, then decide on any other treatment. A round belly can be normal in puppies, so I would not be concerned with that, but we do want to treat her soft stool. Sometimes puppies need a probiotic for their intestinal tract depending on their age and diet history, so be sure to talk to your veterinarian about that as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
