My cat had one kitten, ate placenta. Is her belly still big from more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

My cat had one kitten late last night, and i’m pretty sure the placenta (if that’s how you spell it) came out as well, and she ate it. She is acting normal now but her belly is still a little big. Should I be worried? Or does she maybe still have more kittens to birth? she had them at about 2 am and it’s now 12:40 pm

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is fine that Rascal ate the placenta, most dogs and cats do. Cats can delay labor for up to 24 hours. I would put in a quiet room with a bed, water, food and a litter box. Do not let other animals, children or many people in. Check on her every few hours. If there are no more kittens born in 24 hours have her seen for an X-ray to check. I wish you the best!
