Is a lump on my dog's neck that moves with skin a lymph node?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old | 51 lbs

Are dogs’ lymph nodes just under the skin, like in the skin, or are they more attached to the tissues and bones? If I feel a lump on one side of my dog’s neck and can pull it away from the neck with the skin is that a lymph node?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lymph nodes tend to be more attached to deeper tissues and not superficially close to the skin. However, you can in most instances feel them especially the ones in the neck region also known as the mandibular lymph nodes. You are likely referring to lymph node enlargement. Lymph nodes can be enlarged due to infections or even cancer. I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They can perform a fine needle aspirate which can help reach a diagnosis and then treat accordingly. Good luck!
