Why are my dogs sneezing and reverse sneezing often? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 40 lbs

Two of my three dogs have recently started sneezing followed by reverse sneezing very often, what could be causing this and should I be worried? I have gotten rid of all air fresheners and also recently vacuumed the floor in an atempt to help and it has not helped at all. This has been going on for about two days. Also it doesn’t happen while they are sleeping and they are still eating and drinking normally

Hello, this could be associated with allergies. This can cause sneezing episodes as well as runny eyes and itchiness. Given that two of your pups have started to sneeze, it also fits well with allergies. Other potential cause of this include some form of upper respiratory tract infection. Monitor for persistent sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy or decreased appetite and have them evaluated if you note any. Ideally, to be on the safe side, keep them separate from other dogs in case they have an infection. You’ve already taken the first steps to rule out other causes of sneezing such as cleaning your house and avoiding the use of air fresheners. Hope this helps and best of luck
