My recently adopted dog won't eat or drink and is lethargic. Vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

I adopted a 3 year old dog from a shelter 4 days ago: up until now his eating, drinking, and energy level have been consistent. However he hasn’t been eating or drinking all day and he is not as energetic. He has a vet appointment in a couple of days. What could be the issue and should I take I’m to the vet sooner?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I would try to encourage his appetite with things that are palatable but well tolerated such as lean hamburger meat, chicken and ham. However, if his appetite remains decreased, consider going to your veterinarian sooner. I recommend that you have Rusty evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
