Why is my neutered dog humping after playing? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 16 lbs

My dog was neutered in January 2018, and today, which is July 14, he suddenly decided to hump again. After he was playing with his squeaky toy, he randomly started humping the pillow. Don’t know if that’s normal.

Hi there. Yes, it's quite normal for neutered males to still hump sometimes. This behavior is often related to frustration, anxiety, or over-arousal during play. As long as he isn't doing it so much that it causes irritation to his penis, it isn't anything to be concerned about - just a normal "dog thing." :)
