My dog has a brown rash on her belly and groin. Why is she licking it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 45 lbs

My dog has developed a rash or something near her groin area, and also odd bits on her belly - seems to be more 'brown' than 'red'. Any ideas what this is? Started about a week ago and don't know if just coincidence that coincides with weather becoming very hot (we recently moved to much hotter area). Photos attached. She doesn't seem to be distress but she is licking or nibbling the area quite a bit.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the photos, Dolores may have a skin infection (yeast or bacterial) or this could be due to allergies. I would recommend the following products, which can be found online quite easily or at your local Petco. I hope this helps! If the rash worsens or does not resolve, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. 1. Malacetic conditioning spray and apply twice daily to the affected area until resolved 2. Douxo PS Calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved
