Why is my senior overweight cat breathing hard? Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

I have a 13 year old cat breathing abnormally. Heavy and quick(ish), nose is flaring, chest is moving as well as her belly and when she sits her head is slightly outstretched like she's leaning forward. Could she be having difficulty breathing due to the current hot weather? She's a little overweight.

I am afraid this is an emergency. Your cat could have a pulmonary blood clot, a foreign body in her airway or other airway-obstructing problem. Please take her to an out of hours vet now. If you do not know where to take her, ring your vet and his answering service will refer you to the best place.
