My dog's belly is swollen, she's panting, chewing paws, and snapping.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I'm dogsitting a 9 1/2 year old mini schnauzer. Her abdomen is swollen, she pants constantly, has difficulty urinating, rubs her sides against walls and furniture but will snap at anyone who tries to pet or brush her swollen tummy. She chews her paws, even though we rinse them clean with water after every walk. What worries me: she came and pawed me, snapped when I tried to pet her, didn't want to play, has full food and water, and didn't need to potty. What was she trying to say?

Hello sorry to hear about her. It sounds like she may be having severe allergies. This could be due to the environment, food, or even fleas. She should be evaluated by her veterinarian as she may need medications to control her clinical signs. Hope this helps and best of luck.
