My spayed cat is peeing blood outside the litter box. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old

My female spayed (at one year old) cat seemed to have red in her urine. She is litter trained, and has never done this. It looked as though she was searching for a corner in the room, and scratched at the ground as if she needed the toilet. After settling for one, her tail lifted and she just walked on when she was done. On the carpet, there was three splashes of red, and has now faded to a yellow colour. This was last night !

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pips! It sounds like Pips may have bloody urine. Causes of hematuria (blood in the urine) are: urinary tract infection (UTI), crystals in the urine, bladder stones or stress induced interstitial cystitis. The reason he is likely scratching the floor and urinating outside the litter box is because she feels urgency and burning. I recommend having Pips seen by your Vet for an exam and have her urine checked for bacteria and crystals. An X-ray can tell if there is a bladder stone or not. I wish Pips a speedy recovery!

Poor Savannah!! Given that she is peeing in inappropriate places and the urine appears reddish in color, I would suspect that she may have a UTI or bladder stones. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday. The vet can a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis to diagnose if she has a UTI or bladder stones, and can treat her for it.
