My dog has a worm. Should I go to the vet or use store medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

Should I take my dog to the vet to see what type of worm this is? They do have worm medicine you can buy for dogs at my store, should I do that instead? It came out of his rear end. He's not itching at his back end. He acts and eats normal. If you know what type of worm this is what would be the best medication to treat it? Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a tapeworm, however it is hard to know without a scale. If it is about the size of a piece of rice it is likely a tapeworm. Roundworms are also common. You can get a product from the pet store that covers for tapeworm. Best of luck with Sebastain.
