My dog has a lump under his ear for months. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 23 lbs

There is a lump under my dog's right ear. I thought it was a boil at first, but I'm not sure. He has had it for a couple of months. It might have gotten a little bigger, but not much.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging by the picture you have provided, I suspect that this is a cyst based on its appearance. However, it is impossible for me to say what this could be for sure without further testing and without being able to examine Hines. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The veterinarian can insert a small needle into the mass and look at the cells under a microscope to help determine what it could be. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
