My 3-month-old 4lb puppy ate milk chocolate. Will he be fine tonight?

My 3 month old puppy who weighs about 4 pounds ate half a bar of milk chocolate (Cadbury). The chocolate bar also had crushed cookies inside. It’s only been an hour since it happened but I can’t rush him to the vet since it’s already night. Will he be fine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Whiskey is a very small dog, weighing only 4 lbs which makes him more sensitive to possibly eating a toxic dose. I would need the exact type of chocolate bar or the weight of the bar. If he ate 0.5 oz of chocolate he would experience vomiting and diarrhea, anything less he will be fine. One oz ingested requires immediate emergency treatment as he can experience heart arrythmias. At 1.3 oz seizures and tremors are possible and 1.6 oz can cause potential death. You can repost with the weight. It's good that the bar contains crushed cookies and isn't pure solid chocolate. You can also call animal poison control for help. I recommend seeing a Vet now if he ate an ounce or more. Good luck!

If Cookie ate 3 ounces of milk chocolate, at his weight this is enough chocolate to cause a mild toxic reaction. You may see vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, elevated heart rate, and increased urination. Now if he ate dark chocolate, that amount is enough to be lethal, and he will have to see an ER vet immediately. Should he have eaten milk chocolate, keep an eye on him for now. It can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to occur. If you do see any vomiting or diarrhea, withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Hopefully he should be just fine, but if you do any concerns about any symptoms he is showing, take him into a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps!
