My cat is yowling, can't pee at litter box. UTI or emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

My cat has not been peeing for the past day and a half and is now yowling in pain and sitting at the litter box not peeing. I know these are signs of a UTI but not sure what to do about it as we cannot afford the cost for a vet. We have used a liquid we bought a few months ago for UTI but it is empty now. We also have injecting clean water with apple cider vinegar into his mouth. We started this morning. Any help? Or do we need to swallow the pill and pay for a vet treatment

It sounds like he has a urethral blockage so he needs to be examined by a veterinarian right away as this is an emergency and can be life threatening if not treated immediately. You could call your local humane society and see if they can help or try to find a vet that would take a payment plan. Some vets accept Care Credit so you could apply for that. This is a very serious problem and your cat needs to see a vet immediately! I hope you can find a way to get him treated!
