Why does my cat breathe heavy or have trouble breathing when sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 26 days old | 7 lbs

My cat has been having trouble breathing when he's sleeping. He's almost one. He's healthy that I know of. He was a stray. I am getting his shots next month. He eats, drinks and goes bathroom fine. But he breathes heavy when he sleeps sometimes. Like it's hard to catch his breath. He don't do this when he's awake or playing. I'm worried.

Jake is adorable! Thanks for including a picture. Since Jake does not have any abnormal breathing when he is awake or playing, I am much less concerned. Cats dream and will have abnormal breathing patterns when they are doing that, so that is one possibility for what is going on. I would recommend taking a video of Jake's breathing when he is sleeping and show it to your vet when you have his exam next month just to be safe. If there is any abnormal breathing when he is awake, I would certainly have him examined sooner. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
