Why is my dog suddenly hiding under the bed or behind the fridge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has been frequently going under my bed or behind the fridge recently. She just lies down and seems to like it. Should I be concerned? I thought only cats did things like this.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your question. This sounds like new behavior and could indicate that Chloe is not feeling well. I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This may be due to anxiety / stress but I would rather you be on the safe side and have her examined. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

That is very difficult to know the significance. Check under the bed for anything she might be going after such as food or toys. Pay attention to the environment to see if there something that might be scaring her. Lastly, check her for any signs of pain. When in doubt, have the veterinarian examine her for pain. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
