My puppy whines in his crate early morning. How can I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 month and 17 days old

Jasper is nearly 7 weeks old, he sleeps through most of the night which is amazing but around 4:30 he wakes up and wants to play. I take him outside to do his buisness, and then I put him straight back in his kennel, but he continues to whine until I get up and play with him. I usually take him into my bed at this point and try and get him to lie down which works after around 15 minutes. Any advice?

You have answered your own question! The reason you continue to have a problem is because Jasper is doing what works for him . . . whining until you give in and get up. And, as a bonus, you even play with him! You need to stop rewarding him for his bad behavior. Once he does his business (and you have to be "all business" when you take him out of his crate), put him back into the crate and walk away. Ignore his whining totally. Do not respond to him in ANY way. He will whine--maybe even more than usual, since what he used to do isn't working anymore. That's to be expected. After a few nights, once he realizes that his whining is not going to get results anymore, he will stop. If you need further assistance with this, you can click on the prompt to initiate a consult. Good luck with this!
