Are essential oil diffusers safe for cats and dogs sleeping nearby?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I use a diffuser with essential oils at night. My pets sleep with me; so I am wondering if these oils are harmful to them, especially the cats. I use a "breath easy" blend, along with occasional additions orange oil, lavender, chamomile, myrr, frankincense, or eucalyptus. These are added to water and diffused through a cool mist that runs all night long.

Cats can be very sensitive to essential oils, but the amount of oil that is diffused into the air is pretty minimal and not likely to cause harm. If your cats have asthma or respiratory disease I'd recommend avoiding any diffused oils or air fresheners.
