My cat had a UTI, now pees on carpet. How to stop this behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat had a blockage and is now healed. However the vet is saying because he is still urinating outside the litter box he probably has a UTI. He was given a prescription shot and fluids. Is there anything more i can do to try and stop the urinating on the carpets?

I would put multiple litter boxes around the house to encourage him to use them, and clean the box daily. Change out the litter once a week. Cats prefer a very clean box, and having that for him will encourage him to use it more often. Stress can bring on or exacerbate a UTI, so you can use Feliway, which is a pheromone diffuser that helps cats with anxiety. That may reduce any stress he is feeling. It's very important to make sure he drinks plenty of water so he voids his bladder on a regular basis, and cats seems to love drinking running water. I would consider getting him a pet water fountain. I have one for my cats and they love it. Finally, the smell there can attract him to continue to pee on the carpets. I would use an enzyme spray on the areas and deep clean the carpets. I hope this helps!
