My cat has painful skin wounds and crusts. What to do on a weekend?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

My cat has scratched his mouth & ear. The wounds have grown to cover his entire chin & more than ½ his ear is covered in a thick crust. Yesterday, he pulled a patch of fur off of his paw (don't know how.) He's in a lot of pain, but it's Saturday. We gave him a little Benadryl. Is there anything else we should do?

Place an e-collar (cone) on Casper to prevent further scratching or rubbing. Have him examined by your veterinarian today or tomorrow at the latest. He likely needs antibiotics for possible infection. If he is itchy, a steroid may provide relief. Your vet can recommend an appropriate dose of Benadryl to prevent any itch from returning. Rule out parasites, skin infection (bacterial or yeast), allergies, foreign body as potential causes for the condition. If conventional treatment does not help, consider a skin biopsy to submit for pathology to diagnose inflammatory or neoplastic (cancerous) conditions.
