My dog was electrocuted. What are the long-term effects on breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is almost 4 years old, back when she was 6 & 1/2 to 7 months she electrocuted herself, she has developed breathing problems & I was researching on long term effects the electrocution could've had on her but I could not find anything specific on it, could you possibly tell me a few

I am not aware of any long term effects of electrocution. Electrocution causes pulmonary edema or fluid buildup in the lungs, and if a dog makes it through the acute crisis the long term prognosis is generally good. I suppose if she was on a ventilator or developed pneumonia there could have been some scar tissue formation in the lungs. I'd be concerned that the breathing problems are unrelated and would recommend seeing your veterinarian if you haven't already.
