My cat still pees in same spots after medical issue. How to stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old

So I found out why my 12 yr old cat was peeing outside of the box it was because of a thyroid issue but now she is still peeing in the same spots so I am wondering if there is anything I can put there so she won't want to pee there because it is only certain corners of my house.

It may be that the area she has been using wasn't cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner, and so even though you can no longer smell it, it will still smell like a litter box to her. Try cleaning the area again thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's miracle, Urine Off, or Nok out. Make sure you really soak the area with the cleaner. She may also be quite picky about how dirty her litter tray is, so make sure it is cleaned regularly. Some cats like it to be scooped as soon as they use it. Another thing to make sure of is that there are enough litter trays for the number of cats you have. The general rule is one tray per cat in the house, plus an extra. Make sure they are in fairly low traffic areas of the house so she doesn't get an aversion to any of them.
