Dog had fleas. How to soothe red skin and scabs after flea treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Collie | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 83 lbs

My dog has fleas. I've given her a bath and cleaned the room. How do I treat the red areas on her skin and the areas that have developed scabs?

Poor Daisy! Flea bites can cause a lot of skin irritation in some dogs, especially if they have flea allergies. It's good that you've treated Daisy to get rid of the fleas. If the irritation is fairly minor, it should resolve on its own over the next few days now that the fleas are gone - you can try bathing her in aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo to help soothe her skin in the meantime. If her skin is not getting any better in the next 5-7 days, or if she seems excessively itchy or painful with lots of scabs and hair loss, it would be best to take her to the vet for an exam - many dogs with this problem require prescription medication such a short-term oral steroid and an antibiotic to treat it effectively.
