My new puppy cries when alone. How can I bond and ease anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I adopted a puppy around 4 days ago and I'm having trouble bonding with her. She doesn't like staying too close to me but she also cries a lot and very loudly when I have to leave her alone. Is there anything I can do to bond and help curve her separation anxiety?

Household transitions can be very stressful for dogs and especially young puppies. It will likely take several weeks before your puppy is completely bonded to you and understands that you will be the provider of her basic needs for food, warmth and love. Separation anxiety can sometimes be difficult to overcome. Try leaving her for a very short period of time (a couple of minutes) and then gradually increasing the time you are gone so that she understands that you will come back. Continue this pattern over the next several weeks. If that does not help, you can speak to your vet about medical and non-drug therapies that can help with separation anxiety.
