My cat is licking his leg raw and has a red sore. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 5 months old | 18 lbs

My cat is a year and a half old. When I adopted him he had fleas, but no longer does. Now he is licking and chewing at his back leg because it itches. And there is a red sore there from where he continues to scratch it. Is this something I would have to see a vet for? What are the possible reasons for this?

If the skin is broken, Clue is at risk for infection and should see a veterinarian. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. This may be enough to allow healing if the skin is not broken. If it doesn't heal, definitely see your veterinarian. Causes can include flea bite, allergies, local infection/irritation or foreign body.
