My dog eats poop on walks. Is it a deficiency? How do I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 30 lbs

Nemmy eats a LOT of poop on her walks. Obviously I stop her and am able to intervene often but left unchecked she would be eating a ton. I know some poop eating is normal, but I also know there might be some nutritional deficiencies that can cause this behavior and other symptoms. I've been told to muzzle her for now, but what might be the cause and what can I do?

The behavior can be due to boredom, curiosity, hunger or a nutritional deficiency. This behavior is frequently seen in puppies but they typically outgrow it by one year of age. Have Nemmy examined by your veterinarian. Review her diet (type and amount) to confirm proper nutrition. Keep her on a short leash while out on walks. You can use a head harness such as a Halti or Gentle Leader to have more control over her when on a leash.
