Why is my dog peeing often, drinking a lot, and having accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 2 months old | 8 lbs

Mary is acting as if she needs to pee all the time. She will spend 10-20 mins after she actually peed squatting and acting like she's peeing while dropping only a few drops or no pee at all. While she has just started having accidents at night, once on me and in her own bed. She will drink so much water that her stomach gets visibly bigger, we've limited her water at night to prevent accidents and it still happens. What do I do?

She could have a urinary tract infection or a disease that is making her drink more water (kidney disease, diabetes, cushings, thyroid, liver disease, etc.) She needs to be examined by your vet for a work up. Your vet can check a urine sample for an infection and run blood work, if needed, to look for other diseases. Once diagnosed, your vet can recommend treatment. If she has an infection, than your vet can prescribe an antibiotic to treat.

As she is drinking a lot a going to the toilet often there is a medical problem for sure, hopefully it's just a urine infection, you will need to take her to the vet in order to have her urine analysed, if there is an infection she will need a course of antibiotics.
