Help! My dog has orange mucous poop and straining. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old

My dog is passing orange mucous poos and straining. He seems happy in himself, but any food goes straight through. He had an upset a few weeks back after he had tripe sticks.I starved him a day then gave his usual Marcus muhler dry food and tinned deer and wild rabbit. This has always suited him and my other dogs. Then the other day he had a hide stick chew and next day the orange mucous poos started again. Today I gave him rice and fish. He has passed orange mucous but not as much . What is it

It's probably a gastrointestinal upset or infection. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues with the abnormal poo, take him to the vet to get treatment.
