When is my dog's diarrhea or loose stool an emergency for a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Foxhound | Female | spayed | 2 years old

Experiencing loose stool on and off since weds. Morning weds and thurs was normal, afternoon both days was not. No food for 12hs.Switched to chicken and a little food for thurs dinner and fri meals, added food by >1/4c each time. No poop from thurs 1pm-sat 7:30am. Half was normal but second half was very loose, rushing out. Had a few new flavor treats of a brand she's had before, otherwise nothing abnormal as far as we know for past week. Vet is closed for weekend. Is this emergency territory?

As long as she continues to eat, drink and maintain a normal level of activity, I do not think you need to go to the emergency hospital. If the diarrhea worsens, she develops vomiting or stops eating, I would recommend taking her to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital.
