How do I train my dog to stop barking at the door when visitors come?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 14 days old | 23.5 lbs

My dog has been barking and running towards the door whenever someone comes in the house now. She used to not do it before as much as now, but I've just noticed territorial behavior a bit like she thinks she pays the bills around here! How can I make her understand and relax better when someone comes in?

You will need to do some training with her. First, teach her the watch me command so that you can teach her to direct her attention to you when needed. Once she has learned the command then you can start to use it when someone comes to the house. You can use the watch me command to get her attention and then make her sit and stay. With time, hopefully, she will learn some manners when people come to the house. It might also help to enroll her in puppy classes and have a trainer work with her. You should also have her spayed which may help decrease her unwanted territorial behavior. http://www.abetterdog4u.com/articles/teaching_watch_me.htm
