My puppy is mouthing my fingers. Will she bite? How do I stop her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 28 days old

Penelope is starting to want to chew on my finger, does that mean she's going to bite when she gets teeth? I've been saying no when she does it but I don't know if that's going to help how do I stop her?

Chewing is a normal puppy behavior, but it's important to start teaching her what is ok to chew. I would get her a puppy teething toy, like a Kong toy. Whenever she starts to chew your finger or something else not appropriate, tell her "no," and then give her the chew toy. It will teach her what she can and can't chew on.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is likely teething which is a normal part of their growth which has to do with some discomfort while their teeth are growing/changing. The best thing is to get teething toys which you can get from your local pet store or online. I would encourage you to get at least 3 different kinds as they get bored easily. Anytime she is trying to bite, you say no and then give her the toys. This teething stage will soon pass. Good luck and have a good day!
