Why is my house-trained dog only peeing inside after a trip?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog was basically house trained having very few accidents. We left him with family for 10 days and he was very good. Only 2 accidents the whole time. When we came back the first 4 days he was brilliant. But after that he stopped peeing outside. He used to get up and walk to the door to let us know he needed to go. Now when we try to take him out he pees straight away or close to the door inside. Not at night however and he poops outside. He seems to know we are taking him to pee

Sorry that your dog is having this problem. Since this is a new problem, he should be examined by a vet to rule out a medical issue, like an infection. If your vet can't find a medical problem than you will need to house train him again. He may have just regressed from the change in environment and stress while you were away. If he has an infection than he will need an antibiotic.
