My 7-year-old Pyrenees mix is limping, losing weight, and hair loss.

I have a Pyrenees mix, about 100 pounds and 7 years old. Over the last few weeks he has developed lameness in his hips, small patches of hair loss on his face, and has lost weight. Our vet x-rayed his hips and found no issues, but he continues to go downhill. Ideas?

I recommend a full senior work up to find the cause of the weight loss in particular. Rear leg lameness can be caused by hip arthritis, lower back pain, knee ligament issues in addition to generalized weakness from a heart problem or cancer. I would have a blood panel done, and survey X-rays of his chest and abdomen. If everything checks out the weight loss may be the result of pain and if his blood work is normal they can prescribe pain medication.
