My cat is itching, has a rash, and losing hair. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 101 years old | 2 lbs

My 1 yo long haired cat has a rash she scratch so much shes loosing hair. Looks like a allergy? She is terrible to try giving meds orally she froths at the mouth and vomits. Ive tried avil allergy tablets but can't get her to keep it down even crushed and mixed with her food. Ive use a stop itch cream that seemed to help for a short period but she developed a cough for a few days after licking it off. A bath with soothing lavender cat shampoo does help . Not sure what to try next?

Poor Onyx! There are a number of different things that could cause excessive itching and hair loss in a young cat like this. Allergies are certainly one possibility, but she could also have external parasites like fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. Many medications for skin problems can be given as long-acting injections, so avoid the need for daily oral meds since many cats are difficult to medicate :)
