My dog ate a small amount of marijuana. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I was visiting a friend's place with my yorkie and he ate a small nug of a marijuana plant. Much less than half a gram. Will he be ok?

He will probably be OK, but he will probably show symptoms of Marijuana toxicity such as lethargy, altered response to visual or verbal stimuli, injected (blood engorged) conjunctiva and behavior changes. If the symptoms are quite noticeable or severe I would recommend taking Joey to the vet in order to get him supportive treatment.

Ideally, your pet should be seen by your vet to make sure she is okay. I understand any reluctance but most vets are only interested in making sure your pet is healthy and safe. If you can wake her easily from sleep, then let her sleep it off. If she does not rouse easily, or has any other adverse symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, trembling or seizures, get her seen by your vet immediately.
