My dog is scratching his ears and face. What are these red bumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has these red spots on his ears. We think it’s from scratching. He also has a bump on his cheek that he scratches.

It looks like Steve is generally itchy around the head. These little red bumps occur with skin irritation. Itchy skin is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. If he's just itchy around the head, then it could be due to contact with an allergin (i.e. plants, fiberglass). https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-tell-if-your-pet-has-allergies/ 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get treatment if needed. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. Here is a link to some more options for relieving the itch: https://www.petcoach.co/article/4-great-strategies-for-relieving-your-dog-s-allergies/ I hope this helps you to identify the problem. If not, then it would be worth taking him to the vet. We can usually discover the cause quickly and provide the most effective treatment.
