My dog slipped on ice and is limping. Is it a muscle strain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 9 years and 11 months old

I took my dog to the vet a week and a half ago because he was arching a lot and not putting weight on his one back leg immediately when getting up. She said it wasn’t a herniated disc but overuse of muscles (he’s also overweight) and prescribed a muscle relaxer and anti-inflammatory. Recently, because of ice, he slipped and aggravated it and now won’t put much weight on his back left leg. However he is still arching to the right, which tells me it still might not be a herniated disc. Any advice?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Ronan's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him re-evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs if they have not been taken yet. Such diagnostic can help sort out the exact cause of his issue. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least more pain control medications can be prescribed. What you can do in the meantime is rest him as much as possible which in itself can help tremendously. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
