My dog's rubbing ears, allergy meds failed. Is it safe to use ear mite drops?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

My dog is rubbing his face and ears on floor and making very strange noises. I was thinking allergies ar first but allergy medication does not help. I think it might be ear mites. It’s almost as if the allergy medication stirs up the ear mites and cause more discomfort for my dog. Our vet can’t see him until Tuesday. Is it a bad idea to try ear mite drops for his ears until then? I’ve attached screen shot of video of how he is acting.

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take him to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent. Ear mites is not very common in adult dogs, i would not recommend trying to treat it with ear mite drops without knowing for sure what it is first.
