My dog has swollen legs and paws. How to comfort her before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 85 lbs

My dog is retaining water in her legs and paws and has to be held up to go to the bathroom. I understand that there could be many reasons why she's retaining water, my question is, what can I do to make her more comfortable until we can get her into a vet and get a diagnosis?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. You are absolutely correct that there are many causes for this. If she is uncomfortable with the legs that have edema, I would recommend trying gently massage the legs to help move the fluid and periodically rotate her so that she is not just laying on one side only for a long period of time. If you can get to the vet sooner rather than later, that will help speed up a potential diagnosis and treatment for her. I would recommend that she have a full blood panel run to start with. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
