What's this small, hard black lump on my senior dog's belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

12 year old male mini Australian Sheppard mix with heart failure and Kidney issues. While rubbing dogs belly area and inner back legs noticed small black hard. Maybe size of a tick but I don't think it's that. Super solid. What is it? Should I be concerned? He takes Lasix and enalapril twice a day.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Brady is adorable! Many skin bumps can look the same. It could be a skin tag, a benign pigmented mass or melanoma. It's hard to see the location, but be sure it isn't a nipple. I would watch it for increased growth. If it starts to grow I would see if your Vet could remove it with lidocaine and a punch biopsy awake. I hope this helps and I wish Brady the best!
